The misnamed 'Crisis of the three months of the infant' responds to an evolutionary moment of the baby in the face of shorter feedings, the perception that he is easily distracted when he is on the breast, that he does not breastfeed as often or that he puts his hand in in the mouth, which is often mistakenly attributed to hunger.
These behaviors can cause a lot of restlessness in the mother who - once exclusively breastfeeding was established - was already beginning to relax and trust more in herself and, therefore, in her own nature. As it has been called a crisis and not as outbreaks or growth rates –which might be the most correct- this concept gives this moment a very negative connotation, which can be very harmful for the future of breastfeeding.
Unfortunately, the new behavior of the baby is often mistakenly related to the mother not having enough milk. But, you have to remember a maxim in breastfeeding that is based on the fact that milk production is totally related to sucking.
For this reason, the ideal is for mothers to be aware that this moment can disturb them, so it is interesting to know what are the symptoms:
1- The baby is restless, breaks the rhythm of feedings and schedules.
2- She no longer asks for breast so often, something that can be interpreted in different ways: she is not hungry, she does not want to eat or she rejects the breast.
3- Now the little one now takes shots of a few minutes compared to the long sessions at the beginning.
4- The baby is distracted by anything even when he is nursing, he can repeat gestures or movements that are curious.
5- The mother has soft breasts, which she attributes to insufficient milk production.
6- The baby gets less fat, which can reinforce the feeling of hunger.
7- Decrease the frequency of the baby's bowel movements. What can be interpreted as a sign of insufficient intake.
These readjustments are an indication that a baby at three months follows an evolutionary growth pattern, which responds to the fact that being bigger he has become an expert in the art of suction, so they go faster; They begin to be more curious, which is why they are more easily distracted.
The solution is, once again, to turn a deaf ear to the 'lactation experts' materialized in family, friends and neighbors and to go to health personnel with specific training in Breastfeeding and / or breastfeeding support groups, in which other experienced mothers can advise firsthand and knowingly.
So the solution is to relax, trust yourself and, above all, continue to breastfeed the baby. And in a very few days, the routines will be established again because each mother has enough milk and the capacity to manufacture all that the child needs in each of its stages of growth.
